ButohOUT! 2022 KaBuKu-Off! celebrates the extraordinary beauty in distortion through Butoh, Dance of Darkness. It focuses on our fundamental nature of being slightly off centre, weird, twisted and even drowning in a sea of chaos in a post pandemic contemporary way of living life.
ButohOUT! 2022 Spring Season brings the energy of the Japanese word MATSURI 祭 to the Abbotsford Convent. MATSURI 祭 loosely translates as ‘festival’ and describes a community gathering space where rituals are shared with a spirit of celebration. With food, drink, music and dance, we foster our connection withinin the community through the unique fluidity of Butoh.
ButohOUT! 2022 partners with Tamura sake bar located on Gertrude Street Fitzroy, specialising in craft sake, and authentic Japanese Izakaya style food. With a uniquely created collection of Japanese snacks and SAKE for ButohOUT!, enjoy this quintessential Japanese experience while watching the performance and/or while attending the night club!
Program 1 - Blessed Chaos - 祝福のカオス Canceled
Following the success of 2021's ButohOUT performance, Odd Hours (nominated by Green Room Awards for Best Dance Ensemble 2021), Blessed Chaos explores beauty in distortion with site-specific work where audience are invited to move through performances, visual arts, voice and video installation at Industrial School, Abbotsford Convent.
With a cast of 15-strong members, this ButohOUT! ensemble performance continues to traverse boundaries and challenge limitations through unique contemporary styles of Butoh, Blessed Chaos takes its inspiration from the original Kabuki theatre of the early 1600s, a subversive non-art form, which unashamedly and passionately expressed ugliness and beauty.
Blessed Chaos is directed and curated by award-winning choreographer Butoh punkess Yumi Umiumare who draws upon her unique diverse cultural and interdisciplinary influences, including Butoh, cabaret, abstract theatre, ritual and spirituality.
Program 2 - Butoh-Night-OUT! (25th & 26th only) - Canceled
Butoh meets Grunge in a night club environment with DJ, Ai Yamamoto, video projection, karaoke and short acts (attacks) of guerrilla performances curated by Yumi Umiumare!
Reviving the past when Butoh dancers used to dance in night clubs and strip clubs, exposing their bodies in this dark underground world, ButohOut 2022 is summoning the spirits of those raw times, transforming Industrial School into a contemporary sake/dive bar!
