This specialised intensive will be facilitated by local legend Japanese-Australian Butoh dancer, choreographer and a creator of Butoh Cabaret, Yumi Umiumare. Participants will explore the fundamental method, discipline, philosophy and physical expression of Butoh as well as its core elements: ‘Being', ‘Spatiality’,’Abstraction' and Yumi’s unique embodiment of ‘Dramatic Nature’. 

Through the artistic theme “Primal Colour”, this workshop creates platforms for participants to explore their authentic movement vocabulary. Butoh, classically presented in the colour of white (ie. white make-up), is believed to 'erase' and ‘de-identify’ the performers excessive and artificial layers.

Through stripping back layers of conditioning they will explore the essence and source of emotion through colour, utilising metaphorical expressions.

This course is suitable as an introduction for those who have not experienced Butoh as well as those who have done it before, as new perspective will be constantly found through the repetition and deeper exploration.
