We are back again with high spirit, after having the cancellation of the performance season!

We would love to form ButohOUT! Ensemble again this year to celebrate our ButohoUT! 2023 Out of Order directed by the Artistic Director, Yumi Umiumare and other Melbourne-based highly acclaimed artists and collaborators.

This is a non-paid performance opportunity, but we believe that the laboratory & development process leading to the final performance week with professional artists (Yumi Umiumare, Emma Bathgate, Jacqui Stockdale, Ai Yamamoto) would definitely feed into your own creative practices in multi-faceted ways.

1 - Artistic Rational for ButohOUT! 2023

ButohOUT! Out of Order is an invitation to confront and celebrate being out of order. It shines a light on aspects of life that can be difficult to chew, swallow, and digest. This positive approach to the dysfunctionality of today will give artists and participants an unconventional form of relief by way of a spiritual upheaval.

Butoh offers a unique perspective on the idea of being out of order, and can provide a source of insight, inspiration and creativity in the face of disruptions and challenges. Serious challenges not only caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but also the global crisis and human tensions we face today which beg the question “How do we create new ways of being that allows our heart and minds to heed what these times are asking of us?”

Originally called Dance of Darkness, ButohOUT!2023 revives the 70’s/80’s era where Butoh thrived in nightclubs and strip joints. ButohBAR OUT of ORDER summons the raw spirit of those times, embracing the metaphor of a human world out of order to provoke reflection on our post-pandemic existence.

3 - What we want from you;

A. Creative Intention

  • To develop and create your performance based on the theme of Out of Order in ButohOUT! 2023. Please describe your idea in the form.

  • To be a part of the ensemble Yumi will direct between 'the individual sections’.

B. Sense of commitment

  • Attend as many rehearsals as possibly you can

  • To help our bump-in and preparation where you can

  • To attend the dress rehearsal & performance dates (see schedule)

C. Workshop Series
We encourage you to participate in at least one of the workshop series if you are performing in the show. We are creating a special discount (a $50 discount for each workshop from the concession price).

Please let Yumi knows which one you want to participate, as we get you to register slightly different way than general public would do.

4 - What we can offer you are;

  • Creative platform with venue hire, technical equipments

  • Artistic support and exchange for your own creation

  • Publicity and promotion support including flyer, program and documentation photos

  • Volunteer performer Insurance

  • Snacks and drinks and fun!

  • Dinner & Drinks on the final day

  • A small honorarium at the end of the season
